IT degree programs—from bioinformatics to computer and communication technologies

In Germany, there are many different degree programs that enable a career in IT. These include computer science, business, media, and engineering informatics, as well as computer and communication technologies, medical informatics, and bioinformatics.
The gender imbalance is already apparent at this stage. Although the proportion of women in computer science-related degree programs has risen steadily since 2008, it was only 21.8 percent in the 2023/24 winter semester. This means that less than a quarter of all computer science students are female.

Careers in computer science – Women in Tech

For a long time, computer science was a field that mainly attracted men. This has changed in recent years. How many “women in tech”—as they are also known—are there in Germany today? In 2020, only 19 percent of employees in IT professions were women, placing Germany in the lower mid-range in a European comparison. To further change this imbalance and promote women in tech, companies such as IGZ offer numerous benefits to inspire women to pursue a career in IT.

Why women in particular should choose to become part of the IT industry

  1. Attractive remuneration
Compared to other industries, careers in the IT sector are above average in terms of pay—a strong incentive, especially for young professionals.

  2. High job security
The demand for IT specialists is growing steadily. Those who work in IT belong to one of the most crisis-proof job markets there is.

  3. Low physical strain
Unlike many traditional professions, the physical strain of everyday IT work is low – an advantage that is often underestimated.

  4. High flexibility
Many IT tasks can be performed remotely. Flexible working hours and the option of mobile office are widespread in the industry.
